The Product

As of March, my product is that I have been accepted to Northern Arizona University as a Biology major. Being that my first Independent Component was taking an MIT Biology courseware class, I feel that it aided me in my decision in ultimately declare as a Biology major. With a degree in Biology I can then go pre-med and medical schools as well as residency come soon after.

1. Did you find any aspect of adjusting to any type of sanitizing routine in your daily job specifically difficult? Ex.? How so?
2.  Do you feel that certain hospitals vary in their sets operating room routines? How so?
3. What are certain aspects of the disinfecting routine you must perform that you would change?
4. Are there things that you have learned throughout your career that have led you to feel this way?
5. Do you see a difference in the way colleagues disinfect their hands or equipment perhaps? If so what?
6. Did you find that your education lacked in what was going to be truly asked of you in this job? If so how?
7. If not what do you think lead to your success and thorough understanding?
8. Do you feel that the school you ultimately chose to attend affected the way that you approached the field? How so?

Independent Component 2 Plan Approval

1.     Write a description of what you plan on doing for your independent study component.

For my second independent component I plan on doing more service learning hours at San Dimas Community Hospital.

2.     Describe in detail how you think your plan will meet the 30 hours work requirement.

By simply taking more time out of my week to dedicate to going to the hospital I do not see a problem in meeting the additional 30 hours.

3.     How does your independent study component relate to your EQ?   

This independent component study would help with my essential question being that it does have to do with medicine and working in a hospital environment. What better way to gain that type of insight and experience if not volunteering at a hospital and obtaining that kind of firsthand experience with medical professionals and patient environment? Which I why I decided this time around for my independent component 2 I would try do something more hands on as opposed to taking a class at which would surely give me the knowledge but not so much the experience.

Independent Component 1

1. Literal

-  I, Christine Valdivias, affirm that I completed my independent component, which represents 30 hours of work. 

-  Explanation of what you completed:

I have completed an entire online MIT open courseware course, printing out and completing reviews, study material, problem sets, as well as quizzes.

2. Interpretive

This course helped me in getting a deeper understanding of what it is at the base of this field that I would like to get into in the future. I believe like most people that you cannot enter a field without testing out the waters first and seeing if you truly liked it this course did that for me, it affirmed why it is I am interested in this area of study in the first place.  

3. Applied

This course helped me in giving me a better understanding of the base knowledge I will need to understand to further understand my EQ as a whole. On the surface sure my EQ seems very straight forward but it is the interworkings of contamination and bacteria as well as skills acquired through an extensive education that allow me to answer my eq. In the MIT open courseware for example I learned about the nervous system and stem cells as well as how cancer spreads in the body all aspect that could very well affect an anesthesiologist in a surgical room and present real life complications form them. Knowing this type of basic knowledge allows you to build on it, further understand and grasp concepts that are important, which is why I feel this course was such a tremendous help to my senior topic.

EQ: What is the best way to prevent complications as an anesthesiologists?

1. Commitment to being a life long learner

Having a thorough knowledge and understanding of the field you are entering.

2. What possible evidence do you have to support this answer?

- In this first piece of research I found that the amount of schooling necessary to reach the career goal of becoming an anesthesiologist. Being that you need 4-year university/med-school/residency and a continued expansion mandated by the state after acquiring the initial education necessary, commitment to the expansion of knowledge is crucial.    

- Through this second piece of research I found that CRNA’s have the knowledge necessary to do the same jobs the anesthesia providers do, and being that you do not have to pay them the same amount they get paid less. Being informed on all the new technologies, advancements, as well as discoveries it puts you ahead f those looking to take your job.

- This third piece of research helped in bringing to light the difficulty of keeping a patient unconscious and the different techniques as well as signs an anesthesiologist must know about. Being able to identify these signs order to keep a patient safe.
